Crystal plates can be used as birefringent filters when used in conjunction with a linear polarizing element. In the case of tuning the wavelength of cw lasers, a single birefringent plate, when oriented at the Brewster angle, serves as both linear polarizer and birefringent filter. More generally, birefringent plates are important components of narrow-band filters, and they have a high overall optical transmission.
